Sam & Max (also known as 'The Telltale Trilogy' by the fandom), is an episodic series of video games by Telltale Games. Throughout it's four year run, The Telltale Trilogy spanned across three whole point and click game seasons. With Telltale Games' very existence being an indirect consequence of the cancellation of Sam & Max: Freelance Police, The Sam & Max Telltale Trilogy might be said to be Telltale's raison d'être. At any rate, it put them on the radar and continues to be their largest (and most well-received) single project from their now beloved Telltale Golden Era (2005 - 2011, when Telltale made traditional point and click games).

The first season, nowadays known as Save the World, was initially co-published with GameTap, then brought to retail with JoWood (and The Adventure Company, a branch of the JoWood-owned DreamCatcher Interactive). The second season, Beyond Time and Space, was also initially co-published with GameTap, and was brought to retail by Atari in 2009. The third season, The Devil's Playhouse, however, was fully published and developed by Telltale Games themselves, and the game was available for purchase through The Telltale Store, Digital Storefronts (Steam, PSN, GOG), and the Apple App Store (iPad version of 301: The Penal Zone).

In March of 2020, Skunkape Games assumed the publishing rights to The Sam & Max Telltale Trilogy, following the dissolution of Telltale Games in 2018, and have been publishing remastered versions of the games since December 2020.

Characters[]

The Telltale Trilogy is widely known in the Sam & Max community for having the most unique side characters created in the franchise, even to the point where a lot of the side characters themselves became iconic to the franchise. The Telltale Trilogy and it's emphasis on side characters well written chemistries with Sam & Max have since then popularized the use of side characters in Sam & Max media, compared to the games, show and comics that came before it, which didn't flesh out the side characters as much as The Telltale Trilogy did back in 2006 - 2010.
