Sal is a supporting character introduced in the Telltale series, being briefly mentioned in Beyond Time and Space and later debuting as a major character in the third episode of The Devil's Playhouse.
Character Detail[]
Sal first visually appears in They Stole Max's Brain! in which he is employed by Anton Papierwaite as a night guard at The Museum of Mostly Natural History. Sal seems quite relaxed and normal, though he believes his boss is a loser. He threatens to throw Max out, before Sam places Sammun-Mak's brain in his brainless body. Sal is quite loyal to his boss; he is so loyal that when Sam replaced his headset with the tour guide headset (voiced by Papierwaite) and Sam makes the headset tell him to poke the eyes of one of General Skun-ka'pe's minions; Sal follows, and is attacked by the minion (breaching Skun-ka'pe and his boss's relation). He is hospitalized, though in Sammun-Mak's alternate reality he works as the boss of the gift vault.
In Beyond the Alley of the Dolls, he resigns from his job at the museum, because of being beat up by General Skun-ka'pe's army so he could take a job stacking crates, while surrounded by Samulacra. He draws a picture of Grandpa Stinky's favorite cake under Sam & Max's request, which Max can use the rhinoplasty toy with to transform to. It is later revealed that he and Girl Stinky are having a relationship, and are plotting to knock out Grandpa Stinky. Before they can say anything else, they are taken under Charlie Ho-Tep's control. While being controlled, Sal topples from the center into the bottomless abyss yet as shown later, he survives. An extra scene after the credits shows Girl Stinky crying out for Sal.
Sal is revealed to be alive and well in The City That Dares Not Sleep where he runs from Sam at the beginning of the episode. Later, he meets with Stinky on the roof of Boscotech Labs and it is revealed that the two have been scheming together for 'decades'. However, he is suddenly abducted by giant Max when Sam makes him hungry for cockroaches. Sal agrees to help Sam take control of the arms by taking advantage of his guilty conscience. At last, Sal suffers from radiation poisoning and lays down on the couch in Max's brain where he dies... However, a figure of a giant cockroach appears in the "crimefighting" ending of episode 5. It's unclear whether it's Sal or another one of his kind. Sam, when clicking on the deceased Sal, mentions that he'll give him a "royal flushing" and make sure he's remembered.
Sal is mentioned in Poker Night 2. Sam tells Brock he sounds like someone he knew, and then mentions Sal. He tries explaining the events of Episode 5, only to stop after realizing how idiotic it sounded when spoken. Max tells Sam that he believes him.
Appearance[]
Sal is 6-and-a-half foot tall[1] anthropomorphic cockroach. He has a brown exoskeleton, and is mostly naked with the exception of an open button-up shirt and baseball cap with a white rectangle, the cap also has the word "security" written on it. His shirt has a security badge on the left and a name tag on the right. He is always seen wearing headphones, given to him by Anton Paperwaite when he was employed at The Museum Of Mostly Natural History. Sal has broad shoulders, a soft triangular face and four arms, the upper of which he seems to primarily use, while the lower are much stubbier and are used for holding miscellaneous items.
Personality[]
Sal is a nice and relaxed guy who doesn't seem to let much bother him. He is friendly towards Sam when they first meet, and acts as a friend and occasional ally to him during The Devil's Playhouse, sometimes unbeknownst to his knowledge. He seems to be nice to every person he meets, overall being a pretty kind character. Sal seems to take his jobs seriously, as he reluctantly informs Sam that he'll have to throw Max's brainless corpse into the incinerator if he doesn't move it, despite having sympathy for him. Sal loves and is loyal to Girl Stinky, going as far as to help her in her plans to kill her grandfather, even though he seems unsure about it. However, after Sam and Max catch Sal kissing Girl Stinky in Beyond The Alley Of The Dolls, Sal seems to hide from pretty much everyone around him, seemingly either wanting to keep his love a secret or not want Sam to tell anyone about his and Girl Stinky's plot to kill Grandpa Stinky. Sal has an unspecified dark past that he's ashamed of, causing him to sacrifice himself as a form of atonement in The City That Dares Not Sleep. Despite being pushed around a lot by almost everyone he meets, Sal still managed to get through his struggles regardless.

Trivia[]
- Vegas Trip based Sal's voice on Patrick Warburton[2] who voices Brock Samson from The Venture Bros. In Poker Night 2, Sam says that Brock reminds him of Sal.
- Vegas Trip also voiced Chuckles, [2]a member of the toy mafia and assistant to the former President.
- Sal was originally shown in the first Trailer for the third season in which he was seen in the sewers, presumably in episode one, which never happens in the final game.
- Sal is also shown in the final trailer for The Devil's Playhouse remastered, being shown in Max's brain. This is one of three times we see clips of The City That Dares Not Sleep in the trailer.
- Many people in the fan base think Sal's death was unjust, and Sal's voice actor agrees[2].
- Sal has apparently heard a lot about Sam and Max[3], presumably through Girl Stinky.
