This is a page detailing the use of the placeholder character "Lumpy" by the general Sam & Max fandom.
Character Detail[]
A majority of known Lumpy interpretations have little to no publically available backstory - or, if they do have a backstory, do not have an extensive one.[1]
Appearance[]
With Lumpy being made to be a player self-insert, it makes sense that there would be many different interpretations of how they would look.
While many users give Lumpy a full face and appearance[2][3][4], others opt for drawing them as a blank slate, occassionally with an identifying marker (such as the word "Lumpy") somewhere on their body.[5]
Though Lumpy is usually portrayed as human, there are multiple instances of them being shown as some sort of animal.[6][7][8][9] Although that animal is almost always a mammalian, there is one known instance of a lizard Lumpy.[10]
Personality[]
While Lumpy has no set personality, the community at large generally assigns them a list of similar traits. They are usually put into the role of a "straightman" character, acting concerned or surprised by, or even afraid of, Sam and Max's general antics, even after the events of This Time It's Virtual.
At the same time, some users portray them as being on the same or similar levels of chaos to Sam and Max.
Relationships[]
Lumpy is almost universally portrayed as being friends with Sam and Max, though usually has some form of rivalry with Max even after he would stop hating them.[11]
Generally, people put Lumpy in the role of an adoptive child to Sam and Max, alongside characters found in canon, such as the Geek, Sam Jr., or their own "fankids" (fan-made children for the characters).[12][13][14]
On occassion, people will ship their version of Lumpy with another character, usually Sam.[6] So far, there has only been one public instance of a Lumpy interpretation being shipped with another original character by the same creator, or any character not found in the Sam & Max series.[15]
Lumpy is rarely shown to have any sort of relationship with the other new characters introduced in This Time it's Virtual.
